Online Classes are FREE!
Students will become familiar with the language of the Church in order to develop a deeper appreciation of the use of Latin in the Church's Liturgy and devotions.
Pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar will be covered. We will use the Church's most common prayers and texts for this.
Classes start on Thursday, November 5th at 7:30 PM via Zoom.
You will need to purchase the textbook, "A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin" by John F. Collins (available on Amazon) and a good English-Latin dictionary or dictionary app (such as S.P.Q.R. for Apple devices). Be sure to order the book via AmazonSmile.com and choose Annunciation.

Michael Martin, a parishioner of Annunciation Catholic Church for 24 years, is the author of the website Thesaurus Precum Latinarum (www.preces-Latinae.org) which contains a large collection of Latin prayers and hymns. Mr. Martin works at NASA and has a side business of identifying, transcribing, and translating religious texts in Medieval Latin manuscripts (Psalters, Books of the Hours, etc.). He has graciously offered to teach this course free of charge for Annunciation parishioners.
A good comprehensive Latin dictionary is recommended, such as Lewis & Short or Cassel's.
Even better is a good electronic version that runs on your smart phone or tablet that can do the following:
- It has Lewis & Short as its main dictionary (L&W is a standard work)
- It allows the Latin entries to be searched.
- It allows the English definitions to be searched.
- It will take the inflected forms of a Latin word and show you the dictionary form.
SPQR will do this.
